General Practice is as tough as it’s ever been, and especially challenging for those in leadership and management roles. Despite this, it can still be a great place, and you can still enjoy success.
If I were leading a practice today, these are the five priorities I’d focus on.
1️⃣ Run the Practice Like a Business
Make the key business ingredients solid and it will translate to the priority of delivering sustainable patient care.
2️⃣ Set a 5-year Vision and 1 and 3 year plans
You and your team need to know where you’re heading, and have a clear actionable plan to get there.
3️⃣ Develop all your team and create a succession plan
Skilled and motivated staff deliver greater things and stay with you longer. Succession plans for all of your key roles, not just the highest paid, will future proof the practice.
4️⃣ Engage with patients
Patients are a significant and often untapped resource who can help promote, improve, advocate for and support a practice. Satisfaction is more likely if patients are engaged.
5️⃣ Collaborate beyond the practice
The need and requirement to work with others will increase. Don’t wait to be told what place you have in your neighbourhood, take a lead role to shape it and the benefits.
