Don’t do it on your own

The New Year is when a Practice Manager’s thoughts turn to goals for the next 12 months. I have my plans but this year something else is as clear to me as it should be to all PMs. I can’t do this on my own.

The PM role is now big and complex. There are too many requirements and deadlines to keep on top of. A need to be compliant and to keep the money coming in. To be abreast of the immediate and also looking forward. There is an endless list of demands and skills needed.

There’s long been an expectation that the PM can do it all, that’s now unrealistic.

It’s accepted GPs can no longer do it alone and are bringing in the additional skills of paramedics, pharmacists, social prescribers etc. PMs need that additional specialist support too whether that’s Asst PM, PA or a manager for finance, IT, HR, or compliance. Different practices will have different needs.

Without this, things are missed, stress increases and the PM becomes demotivated.

So, when you’re making your plans, this year make one of them to start building the specialist skills to support you as a PM.

· What could you hand over that you currently do?

· What areas could do with better skills or more time allocated to them?

· What would help you and the business?

Others get help, so should you.
