What can I do to help you?

❓ Said the GP to the receptionist

❓ Said the coder to the nurse

❓ Said the PM to the secretary

❓ Said the pharmacist to the GP

❓ Said the social prescriber to the patient

It’s probably not said often enough, but it should be a constant question.

A general practice is one big team. Built of several teams working side by side. With work that overlaps, and tasks passed on to be progressed or completed. The actions of one individual has a definite impact on another. The work of one team makes a difference, good or bad, to that of another team.

What I do, or don’t do, can really make a difference to you, and what you do can really help me.

That one question ‘what can I do to help you’ can make things far more efficient, far safer, far better. It can have a significant impact for the patient.

In my experience it’s a question rarely asked, but we would all benefit and work better and happier together if it always was.
