How much time do you spend ’on the business’ as opposed to ’in the business’?
Are you clear on the difference?
As a practice management and leadership team how much time you spend on each is something you should be aware of. It’s something I was acutely aware of, and the battle was always to spend more time working ON the business.
Working IN your business is Operational, the day-to-day tasks and responsibilities of managing staff, responding to patients and putting out fires. The pressures and demands of primary care pull that way, and while it’s essential it doesn’t move you forward.
In contrast, working ON your business is Strategic. It’s big picture, looking ahead, developing your business and doing what will build a strong sustainable business. It’s focusing on growth and long-term success, and is what you need to be spending time on.
Working ON the business is what you do, so you can make your practice the best business it can be.
