After a couple of weeks of interviewing I’m very aware of the importance of a good first impression. Once formed it’s difficult to change so it’s vital to get it right.
There are many situations where you and the team need to make a positive, lasting first impact. You want others to feel at ease, as the better you make them feel, the more likely they are to have a good first impression. It’s the easily forgotten simple things that make a good first impression.
I know what works on me, so I’m sure it’s works the other way too.
A warm, friendly SMILE says you’re approachable.
I like BODY LANGUAGE that’s relaxed not casual, interested but not assertive, and good eye contact.
Maintain a POSITIVE ATTITUDE, even if others are being negative or critical.
MANNERS matter so please be polite. Asking questions is good but don’t interrupt and be respectful.
If you’re present then be ENGAGED and play your part in the conversation.
I’m not ‘mate’ I’m Gary, and if you want to make a good impression, make an effort and USE MY NAME.
I want you to show you’re LISTENING and not distracted. You can expect me to focus on you so It’s right I should expect the same.
Obvious stuff you say? We’ll it doesn’t just happen but like many simple things its very powerful.
