You’ve got to provoke people If you want to succeed.

Doctors hands consoling patient

Ok, that itself is a provocation but successful leaders know the importance of stepping outside the confines of the status quo. They’re comfortable using provocation, disruption and challenge to encourage others to change and achieve more.

That might sound negative, destructive and something to avoid but they are essential skills for leaders. These challenges accompanied with support, can encourage, inspire and motivate others.

Ask questions to disrupt the status quo.

Shake the team up by using provocative questions to get discussion and thinking going.

Challenge tradition and conventions.

It doesn’t always have to be done the same way. Challenge how work is done, and structures and politics, to find a better way.

Seek and encourage change.

Growth often comes as a result of being challenged. Look for and facilitate opportunities to change to disrupt and stimulate progress.

Gain insight from the diverse and unusual.

Connect with different thinkers and opinions and try different sources of information and insights to get new ideas and incite challenge.

I love using provocations and seeing the positive reactions they get. Trying shaking things up, you might just enjoy it and find it brings an unexpected success.
