Do you know the poem ‘For want of a nail’?

Writer's picture: Gary HughesGary Hughes

It’s a leadership and management lesson from the 13th century.

I was taught it many years ago and I’ve never forgotten it. The poem is a reminder of the importance of not overlooking the small, easily forgotten details if you want to achieve something big.

It came back to me while thinking about preparing for a forthcoming webinar with Suvera in which I’ll be talking about change. Looking at the poem in a different way, and when thinking about making a change, there are also two important messages:

🔶 It’s a lesson that really big change can start with small steps.

🔶 It’s also a reminder of how nothing is achieved without taking that first step.

Primary care needs change for sure, and for many that’s hard to do and frightening to think of. If that’s the case, don’t think too big, you might be better to start with the horseshoe nail.
